Thailand's Integrated Food Company Implements CipherLab RS36 UHF RFID Solution to Improve Livestock Inspection

Livestock Inspection

As one of the leading food companies based in Thailand, the company has expanded its business to an Agro Business ranging from animal feed products and health products to livestock. Having its own livestock farm, the company is focusing more on the high standard of quality control in its production process.

With a large animal population that requires feeding, intensive livestock farming has been strongly linked to human health problems. Thus, all large food resources need to ensure traceability and transparency within the food chain. However, livestock is a movable asset. Continuous monitoring and quick and accurate identification has become challenging. Because of that, livestock ear tagging for traceability has turned into an ideal solution.

To better trace and track every pig from birth to the slaughterhouse, the company previously used NFC tags on its pigs' ears with a reading distance limited to 5 cm. Due to this restriction, on-site operators had to closely approach the pigs, and spend their time searching for and tracking moving pigs in order to read their data whenever they needed to identify them. It made their work harder and more time-consuming.

The Solution: CipherLab RS36 UHF RFID Reader and OCR Scanning

To overcome these challenges while expanding their businesses, the company realized that they urgently needed a solution with a significant upgrade to advanced tracking methods and data management. This need led the company to adopt UHF RFID tags with easy data capture to better manage and track their pigs. CipherLab's RS36 UHF RFID solution proved to be particularly valuable to the company.

Better User Experience
CipherLab RS36 UHF RFID ReaderTaking advantage of non-contact RFID technology and visual ear UHF RFID tags, the operators can now use CipherLab's RS36 UHF RFID reader to easily and remotely scan tags attached to pigs' ears and quickly check a pig's weight, see whether it has been impregnated or not, review its medical history, and any other health-related data all in the period of one working day. It essentially saves an operator’s time making daily checks and managing their pigs' feeding times.

Rather than spending precious time searching for specific pigs with UHF RFID tags, operators can now locate specific UHF RFID tags to find the target pigs accordingly through CipherLab’s self-developed UHFTag Helper app. It supports multiple RFID tags' searches, and operators can receive notification sounds to identify the target when the search position range is narrowed.

To quickly check the weight of a pig, the CipherLab Mobile OCR scanning solution can read the 7-segment digits on weight measurement and automatically record the data in the database. This improves work efficiency and reduces manual data entry errors.

One of the most common issues with OCR recognition in RFID applications is the camera getting blocked by the UHF RFID gun. However, with the unique design of CipherLab's OCR Scanning solutions, it is easy to switch to barcode reader operation mode when the UHF RFID is in use.

With greater flexibility and software upgradability, it further allows for users' to quickly switch between RFID reading and barcode scanning by just clicking a button on the user interface of the UHFTag Helper app.

Time-saving on Data Storage and Customization
Thanks to the larger data storage of RFID tags, the tags and accompanying software can store each pig’s entire history, including its birthing time, weight, age, sex, medical records, and number of offspring. Operators can rely on the data to quickly identify diseased pigs and track pig inventory more accurately.

By default, the UHF RFID reader is set to read UHF RFID Tags in HEX code, and though it’s not ASCII friendly, the UHFTag Helper app can convert HEX to ASCII while reading a tag, thus eliminating the time and money required to find a system integrator to develop apps to fulfill this requirement.

Why CipherLab?
